Royal Opera House Muscat

A sophisticated sequence of landscape treatments and spaces sets the stage for strolling, quiet conversations or festive gatherings around this icon of high culture in the capital of the Sultanate of Oman.
Built on the royal orders of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, the Royal Opera House Muscat is an exquisite example of contemporary Omani architecture. The opera house and its gardens serve as a centre of excellence in global cultural engagement.

The Government of the Sultanate of Oman directly appointed the NatureCulture team to design the gardens  of this new cultural precinct. The design brief called for exotic and highly manicured gardens. NatureCulture’s design uses recycled water to irrigate all planting and lawn areas.

NatureCulture’s design presents a contemporary interpretation of classical garden styles associated with royal estates.

Beyond the maze garden, limestone paving frames lawns  used as gathering spaces for cultural events. Groupings of densely planted trees frame these spaces to create a human-scaled sense of enclosure.

NatureCulture sources local materials whenever possible. The landscape design uses a locally quarried stone. NatureCulture researched traditional stone detailing for the solid stone elements to continue the architectural heritage traditions of Oman.
