The Makers District

Tree gardens visually soften, shade and cool a new type of community space in Abu Dhabi’s hip Makers District.

Below-ground, it’s even more exciting.

The Makers District mixed-use development on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island, fosters creativity, community, and outdoor living. A dynamic hub, integrating residential, commercial, and cultural spaces.

Pixel is at the heart of the Makers District. An 85,000-square-meter development by MVRDV in collaboration with Ramboll unlike conventional high-rise developments. Pixel’s seven mid-rise towers optimize views, shade, and community engagement. These towers frame a vibrant pedestrian plaza, creating an inviting urban space.

The weather in Abu Dhabi is pleasant for most of the year, yet housing doesn’t always encourage outdoor living. With Pixel, we show that connecting with the outdoors is not only possible but beneficial

NatureCulture collaborates with MVRDV to shape vibrant public spaces, creating tree gardens to balance architectural massing and introduce a human scale. These tree canopies enhance thermal comfort and scatter dappled light across the piazza. They provide urban respite and reinforce the project’s commitment to outdoor living and social interaction.

All landscape elements in Pixel are on-structure. NatureCulture works closely with Ramboll in developing sustainable Blue Roof systems that manage stormwater by and reduce peak runoff volumes.

Grouping trees into dedicated tree gardens allows for communal soil volumes, increasing soil availability for individual trees. The NatureCulture way approach improves tree health and longevity and strengthens the resilience of the urban forest by creating interconnected root systems that share resources. Integrating green infrastructure within an architectural framework ensures that the development remains healthy, functional, and sustainable, setting a benchmark for landscape design and urban forestry in high-density urban environments.
